The absorption edge, luminescence, and birefringence of CdSe single crystals under uniaxial stress are measured at 300 and 77°K. The Thomas‐Hopfield model of the valence bands is verified. Some relations between the components of the deformation potential tensors are obtained. The electron–phonon interaction term in dE g /d T at 300 and 77°K, respectively. The stress depencence of the bound exciton luminescence line and absorption edge is found to be the same.
