Estimates are made of the phonon drag contribution to the thermoelectric power of two-dimensional electron systems in semiconductor heterostructures. Calculations are made both with and without magnetic fields, Based upon an estimate of the mean phonon drift velocity assuming boundary scattering for the phonons at the surface and the substrate/epitaxial layer interface. The estimates show that phonon drag may give a significant contribution to the thermopower in both cases, and that oscillations as a function of magnetic field will be seen at low temperatures.
