This report of a visit to the Chinese People's Republic covers much firsthand observation by the author. He investigated the planned birth programs in urban and rural areas of China. Planned birth materials fromfive training texts for health personnel are summarized in an appendix. Pi-chao Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Wayne State University.
