An optical bistable system composed of coupled nonlinear elements is proposed. This system features optical bistability without hysteresis, which appears through pitchfork bifurcation. It is shown theoretically that a flipflop operation and a complete set of logic-gate characteristics can be achieved easily on an all-optical basis.
