An expansion method is used to calculate the expectation values of various operators for the lowest 2S and 2P0 states of all members of the lithium sequence. The method is extended to the calculation of matrix elements connecting the two states and the electric dipole transition integrals are calculated. A comparison with the results of more refined calculations shows that despite its simplicity the method is capable of high accuracy.
