South Korea is striving to achieve carbon neutrality in response to global warming. The 2050 Carbon Neutral Promotion Strategy was announced in December 2020; the goal is to accelerate electrification and promote the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). The strategy aims to establish a carbon-neutral society by 2050 and reduce carbon emissions by 26.3% before 2030. In October 2021, an additional, ambitious proposal of a 40% reduction by 2030 regarding the nationally determined contribution of greenhouse gases was announced to meet stricter carbon reduction targets. Finally, the enforcement of the carbon-neutral basic law was legislated in March 2022.
