A bstract The carcinogenic activities of aromatic hydrocarbons correlate with electronic parameters of K and L regions calculated by graph‐theoretical techniques based upon the simplest variation of valence‐bond theory (resonance theory limited to Kekule structures). The correlation coefficient between calculated and experimental carcinogenicity (Iball index) for ten well‐studied compounds is 0.94. Iball index values for 42 other compounds are calculated with results in satisfactory agreement with experiment. The K, L ‐region hypothesis is supported by the described results.
