The moving speckle patterns produced when laser light with a curved wavefront illuminates a moving rough surface have been studied using photon correlation techniques. Good agreement with the theory of Jakeman (1975) was found particularly with respect to the relationship between speckle and surface velocities. The implications of these experiments for non-contact velocimetry applications based on the moving speckle effect are discussed.
