5-Hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) may play a pivotal role in inducing atrial fibrillation across various clinical conditions, highlighting the potential therapeutic role of 5-HT 4 antagonists.
5-Hydroxytryptamine may act as a hormonal trigger for atrial fibrillation across various clinical settings, suggesting a potential therapeutic role for 5-HT4 antagonists.
Should not change AF management; leaves open whether 5-HT4 antagonists merit clinical investigation.
Serotonin and Atrial Fibrillation. 5‐Hydroxytryptamine, a recent addition to the list of hormonal triggers for atrial fibrillation (AF), may play a pivotal role in the induction of AF related not only to cardiac surgery but also to acute coronary syndromes, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, alcoholism, aging, and conducting tissue disease. This review examines the supporting laboratory and clinical evidence and provides a comprehensive insight into the basic underlying mechanisms involved. It also delves into the potential benefits and limitations of 5‐HT 4 antagonists in the prevention and management of this arrhythmia.
