Summary. Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCIB 9685 was shown to have an l ‐lysine carboxylase optimally active at pH 8‐0 and which showed little or no activity below pH 5·8. For these and other reasons, indicator media were found to be unsuitable for the detection of the enzyme in this organism. All of a further 129 Ps. aeruginosa isolates were active in the decarboxylation of l ‐lysine at pH 8·0.
