The first experimental observation of liver regeneration after damage was carried out in 1883 when COLUCCI injuried guinea pig liver and noted the new hepatocytes. He thought, however, that they arose from leucocytes by nuclear division.Further observations were made by many workers, but it was not until 193 1 that the first really quantitative studies on liver regeneration were published by HIGGINS and ANDERSON.
