Excitation and ionization rates of mercury by inelastic electron collisions in gas discharge plasmas with Maxwellian electron energy distributions have been calculated from the collision cross-section data for electron temperatures between 5000 and 54 000° K. Published cross-section data have been used where available, and estimates have been made in several cases of interest for which no data are known.
