A system of interconnected fluidized beds for chemical looping combustion (CLC) of coal was successfully conducted. A two-stage fluidized bed was designed as fuel reactor. In the experiments, the iron ore was used as oxygen carrier. The effects of operational parameters such as temperature and gasification agent on the performance of coal were studied. In addition, the advantages of staged combustion were presented. The coal conversion efficiency and the carbon capture efficiency increased with temperature in fuel reactor, reaching to about 93 and above 99% at 900 °C, respectively. Steam had a positive effect on the coal conversion and the optimum ratio of steam to the coal was 0.45. Besides, this two-stage fuel reactor could reduce the concentration of unburned gases in the flue gas effectively and the enhanced conversion efficiency of carbonaceous gas was above 10% in the temperature range. The used oxygen carrier was characterized and no obvious sintering appeared on the surface of oxygen carrier. In conclusion, this facility can be an excellent candidate for the application of CLC.
