The general properties of oxygen stars (i /Af0 = 2, 4, 8, and 16), up to and during core oxygen burning, are presented. The reasons for these properties are discussed quantitatively. A `single-zone" approximation for typical conditions during hydrostatic oxygen burning is developed which involves balanced power from 160 + 160 energy generation and from neutrino energy loss. Some implications for nucleosynthesis theory are discussed.
