We employed bronchopulmonary lavage to diagnose an infection withPneumocystis cariniiin two patients with lymphoproliferative malignant lesions and thrombocytopenia. No complications were encountered. In both cases, ample alveolar material was obtained for the preparation of cytologic smears, cell blocks, and a full range of bacterial, fungal, mycobacterial, and viral cultures.
