X or gamma -irradiation of Ti-doped LiF produces and EPR centre of axial symmetry about a (111) axis, with S= 1 / 2 ,g/sub ///=1.971+or-0.001 and g perpendicular to =1.815+or-0.001. The spectrum is attributed to Ti 3+ . ENDOR of the surrounding 7 Li and 19 F nuclei shows the titanium to be displaced by between 0.02 and 0.03 nm in a (111) direction from a lithium site, and suggests that three of the nearest fluorine neighbours are replaced by charge compensating O 2- ions. The centres are no longer observed after the crystals have been heated to 300 degrees C and have yielded the thermoluminescence glow peaks used for radiation dosimetry.
