Collision spectroscopy of the Mg + -rare-gas systems has shown very different behaviour for Mg + -Ne compared with the other systems. This finding is discussed in the framework of the electron-promotion model. The importance of the quasi-u,g symmetry is pointed out and found to be responsible for the selectivity of the excitation processes.
