BACKGROUND Amongst all regional techniques the subarachnoid block is the most convenient, early and effective method of anaesthesia for variety of surgical procedures and pain relief. A number of adjuvants such as opioids, sodium bicarbonate, vasoconstrictors, alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists, cholinergic agonists etc. have been studied to prolong the effect of spinal anaesthesia. Use of opioids is very popular nowadays as it provides quicker onset and spread of anaesthesia and prolonged analgesia, but it is associated wi th side effects notably nausea, vomiting, pruritus, urinary retention and respiratory depression.
