SUMMARY A review of some factors which appear to influence children in making a choice of subjects at ages 13 and over. Researches on personality factors affecting their decision are discussed, together with the influence of their parents, teachers and careers guidance staff. It would appear that the British educational system often forces the child to make a decision early in adolescence, which will affect his subsequent career prospects, on the basis of small guidance and less evidence.
