All of the major events comprising the development of compatible and incompatible plant grafts can occur in the absence of direct cellular contact. A model for graft compatibility‐incompatibility is presented which suggests that grafts will be incompatible only if naturally occurring morphogens that promote the formation of a successful graft are overriden by toxins that elicit graft incompatibility. According to this model, a positive recognition system need not be implicated in explaining graft compatibility‐incompatibility in plants.
