We report room temperature (pulsed) lasing at 463 nm from a (Zn,Mg)(S,Se) separate confinement heterostructure laser diode. Two issues related to the development of even bluer II–VI laser diodes, namely, the ‘‘AX center’’ and compositional modulation, as suggested from electrical and microstructural characterizations of the blue laser diode, respectively, will be identified.
