This review describes a variety of new chemistry that has been established in our research laboratory and by other scientists worldwide related to optical compact disc (CD) technology. In particular, we have discovered that gold substrates from CD-Rs can be used to prepare high-quality, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) after removing the protective polymer films with concentrated nitric acid. It was proven that these substrates are feasible for electrochemical, spectroscopic, and surface wetting studies. We have also demonstrated that CD-R gold films are ideal micropatterned conductive substrates for the "customized" fabrication of material microstructures. In addition, we have been working on the micropatterning of DNA probes on CD-R substrates, and exploring the possibility of using the CD-R writing/reading system for biochip fabrication and gene analysis.
