This statement by Brown Kelly1in his original discussion of the subject is still true of the syndrome he described. Kelly1and Paterson,2,3in 1919, outlined the symptom complex of "spasmodic dysphagia" as one clearly distinct from that of "globus hystericus," achalasia of the cardia or organic obstructive lesions of the esophagus.
