The miniloop culture vessel provides a simple means of obtaining high oxygen transfer rates in a small scale (10 cm 3 ) reactor. The reactor contains no moving parts. The volumetric oxygen transfer rate (measured by Cu 2+ catalysed sulphite oxidation) exceeded 400 h −1 . The high surface: volume ratio (12 cm −1 ) permitted photosynthetic algal cultures with biomass densities over 35 g dm −3 in chemostat steady‐states.
