Summary An attempt was made to establish whether a single intra‐amniotic injection of the naturally occurring prostaglandins could effectively induce mid‐trimester abortion. Initially doses previously reported to be effective (5 mg. of prostaglandin E 2 or 25 mg of prostaglandin and F 2α ) were evaluated, but because of limited success a dose‐response study was undertaken. Abortion occurred within 24 hours in 31 of 35 patients given 20 mg. of prostaglandin E 2 and in all 8 patients given 100 mg. of prostaglandin F 2α by intra‐amniotic injection.
