The long wavelength spectrum of formaldehyde has been investigated in absorption and in emission, both in the gas phase and in the condensed phase. Difficulties in the assignment of certain lines in the spectrum have been satisfactorily resolved. The temperature coefficient of the α band shows that it is a hot band arising from a lower state involving the 1280 cm−1 asymmetric vibration.
