The title compounds 1 and 2 display fascinating structures. They were prepared by simply dissolving BiCl3 in mesitylene and hexamethylbenzene/toluene, respectively, followed by crystallization. The layer structure of the 1 : 1 complex 1 is characterized by η6-coordination of the mesitylene to the metal atom. The same holds true for the novel “inverted” sandwich structure of 2, in which ring-shaped Bi4Cl12 structural units are linked through the arenes to form a three-dimensional network.
