The magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of amorphous binary Tb x Fe 100-x and Dy x Fe 100-x and amorphous ternary (Tb x Dy 1-x ) 20 Fe 80 , (Tb x Dy 1-x ) 33 Fe 67 and (Tb x Dy 1-x ) 43 Fe 57 thin films are presented. The films were prepared by sputter deposition from composite targets onto nominally room temperature substrates. Magnetization, coercivity and magnetostriction measurements reflect the compositional dependence of the easy direction of magnetization in the films. In-plane magnetostrictions of over 300*10 -6 were measured for some of the Tb x Fe 100-x and (Tb x Dy 1-x ) 43 Fe 57 films.
