The source described employs a high tension arc and can operate at comparatively high pressures. The afterglow spectrum is that of the Lewis-Rayleigh glow at low pressures, but is modified at the higher pressures. Reasons are given for interpreting this modification as due to exchanges of vibrational energy occurring in collisions between nitrogen molecules. A modification is made to Mitra's theory of active nitrogen.
