Certain intensity changes arising in the spectrum of the nitrogen afterglow are attributed to collisional energy exchanges between the molecules. A method is described by which the probabilities of such exchanges can be derived from precise measurements of the intensity variations. For N2(B3Πg)—N2 collisions, the probability of a vibrational transition is found to be of the order of 10-2 per gas-kinetic collision.
