An attempt has been made to produce position sensitive detectors with depletion depths of several millimeters by lithium drifting. The technique used involves evaporating a thin metallic layer onto the side opposite the lithium diffusion to provide a uniform resistive sheet. Detectors measuring 8×28 mm were tested with 5.5 MeV α particles and 4.2 MeV protons and exhibited energy spreads of 2–3.5% uncooled and 1–2% when cooled. The position linearity plot of the detectors indicated that the particle position could be determined to within 0.3 mm.
