The stability analysis of two‐dimensional current‐carrying plasmas by use of statistical mechanics is described. This method is applied to a self‐consistent model configuration of the earth's magnetotail. The equations derived are solved analytically, and the results are discussed in view of spontaneous onset of magnetospheric activity.
