Slow waves, which are greatly modified by small changes in the plasma parameters, occur near the plasma frequency. They may be obliquely reflected for the case of an electron concentration gradient orthogonal to the magnetic field, traveling only a short distance but experiencing a large delay. Such waves may account in part for the resonances observed by ionospheric topside sounders.
