A fluidic monostable multivibrator is used as the central part of an injection system for a gas chromatograph using open tubular columns. The system can provide injection bands with adjustable width between a few milliseconds and several tens of milliseconds. The contributions of the equipment to peak broadening are discussed and found to be in agreement with experimental results. At the optimum velocity (ūopt = 171 cm/sec; uo = 190 cm/sec helium) a 0.22 mm i.d. × 1.0 m long column gives Hmin = 0.089 mm for CH4. The Taylor-Golay equation predicts 0.072 mm at the same velocity (190 cm/sec). The corresponding variances are 3.0 × 10−5 and 2.4 × 10−5 sec2 respectively, hence the total equipment contribution is 6 msec2. This equipment permits the achievement of very fast analysis and measurements.
