Poly(phenylacetylenes) were synthesized using various palladium (II) salts as initiators. In the case of palladium diacetate, the polymerizations were found to be extremely exothermic, with explosions occurring on some occasions. The polymers produced yielded two fractions, a methanol soluble and a methanol insoluble fraction. Both fractions were found to be low molecular weight linear polymers.
