By using a large signal analysis for a dispersive optical fibre the FM-AM conversion with respect to binary intensity-modulated PCM systems is discussed. Criteria for the maximum linewidth/bitrate-ratio are derived yielding δv/B < 4.4×10−3, if no degradation of the achievable bitrate-length product is to occur.
