This is the first of a series of papers dealing with work on the surface structure of yarns, which formed the basis for the development of the Sirospun process. The paper explains that untreated single yarns are generally unsuitable for use as warp yarn in weaving, mainly because the surface fibres are not adequately bound. The mechanism by which these fibres are bound into the yarn structure during two-folding is discussed, and a method for achieving a similar effect in a single operation on the spinning frame is presented.
