Anomalies in temperature dependences of the effective work function (WF) for allotropic metals Ru, Hf, Tb, Y and Sc at critical points are established by thermionic emission microscopy. It is shown that WFs decrease as planes deviate from close-packed ones. Surface barriers of the metals studied are estimated semi-empirically and compared with those calculated theoretically.
