Synopsis In the basal New Red Sandstone of Arran (Brodick Beds), interbedded eolian and water deposited sediments are found. Sedimentological features known from comparable modern environments, but not hitherto described from any other ancient sediments, include granule ripples, gravel deflation pavements, pebbles rolled into eolian sands, and fulgurites. Much of the eolian sand was deposited in dunes indicating a wind direction predominantly to the south-west. It has not been possible to determine the detailed morphology of the dunes.
