This study demonstrates that the density of human erythrocytes increases with age and that cell populations with different mean ages can be isolated on the basis of this density gradient. The data suggest that the concentration of Fe59 in the bottom layer of centrifuged erythrocyte specimens may be used to estimate the mean life span of ageing cells.
