The sampling theory for coefficient alpha is well developed and readily accessible in the measurement literature. The theory for the intraclass reliability coefficient, a Spearman-Brown extrapolation of alpha to a single measurement on each examinee, is less widely recognized and less easily cited. This article presents techniques for constructing confidence intervals and testing hypotheses for the intraclass coefficient.
