Several properties of the luminescent quantum efficiency of sodium salicylate, the widely used vacuum ultraviolet phosphor, have been observed and are presented here. A gradual decrease in quantum efficiency is noted as the phosphor layer “ages” in the environment of the monochromator and as it is irradiated by photons of hν ≥ 7.7 eV. Several mechanisms are suggested which might explain the observations.
