Granular ferric hydroxide (GFH) adsorption, a relatively simple retrofit technology for arsenic removal, was studied to determine the kinetics and thermodynamics for arsenic removal. The effects of temperature, pH, turbulence, and concentration of competitive anions were evaluated and modeled using kinetics and isotherm models. The pertinent parameters, such as activation energy, reaction rate constant, and adsorbent capacity coefficients, were calculated under different conditions. Overall test results show that GFH has a significant adsorption capacity for arsenic(V), or As(V). However, the presence of competitive anions—such as phosphate, silicate, vanadium, and selenium—had different adverse effects on As(V) removal with GFH. The results provide useful information for industrial optimization of adsorbent column deployment.
