Since the Chinese National Chronic Gastritis Meeting held in 2000 in Jiangxi Province, progresses have been made in the diagnosis of pathologic criteria of atrophic lesions in chronic gastritis proposed in 2002. 1 In recent years, advances have been achieved in the following topics: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection and atrophic gastritis as well as its development of gastric cancer, the effect of H. pylori eradication on the prevention of gastric cancer, the effect of environmental factors on the development and progress of atrophic gastritis and the chemoprevention of gastric cancer by bioactive food components. Therefore, the Second Chinese National Consensus Meeting on Chronic Gastritis was held on 14-16 September 2006 in Shanghai under the auspices of Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, and was organized by Shanghai Society of Gastroenterology and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine affiliated Renji Hospital and Shanghai Institute of Digestive Disease.Gastroenterologists came from all over the country and two distinguished professors, Professor Pelayo Correa from the USA and Professor Pentti Sipponen from Finland, were invited to attend the consensus meeting and to discuss and revise the consensus draft. The second national Chinese consensus on chronic gastritis was eventually passed through an anonymous vote, according to Delphi process. HISTOPATHOLOGYDefinition of atrophy: the atrophy of gastric mucosa indicates that the gastric glands proper in the gastric mucosa become sparse.Histopathologically there are two types: (i) metaplastic atrophy, where the fundic glands of stomach are replaced by intestinal or psudopyloric metaplastic glands; and (ii) nonmetaplastic atrophy, where the gastric mucosal glands are replaced by fibrous or fibromuscular tissue, or the amount of glands is diminished by the dense infiltration of inflammatory cells.
