Enterococcus is a commonly isolated pathogen following solid organ transplantation, especially in the setting of liver transplantation (1–3). Concomitant with the increased isolation of vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) in the nosocomial, nontransplant setting, there has been increased recognition of this organism in transplantation. Recent reports note colonization rates between 11 and 63% and VRE infections have occurred in 1–16% of patients following liver and kidney transplantation (4–8).
