The construction of a flame detector, the FIDOH, is described. The effects of fuel and carrier gas flow rates and the polarity and magnitude of the polarising voltage on the response of the detector are studied. Three modes of operation are identified, one in which response is based only on carbon content (the molar mode), one based on response to all constituent atoms (the weight mode), and one on the presence of halogen atoms only (the selective mode). For each of these modes, quantitative analysis of mixtures has been undertaken and the results compared with those obtained using a normal flame ionisation detector.
