Interaction of a moderately intense , infrared , short pulse (1 ps) free-electron laser beam with a gold surface is found to cause an intense electron emission (on the order of ) and a corresponding `hot' electron spectra (up to a few eV). We show that heating of the electrons through classical acceleration by the laser electric field in the presence of collisions is a possible explanation for such observations.
