Reports the observation of molecular Na 2 + ion yield when Na vapour in the density range 10 12 -10 13 cm -3 is irradiated by a pulsed laser with intensity 10 5 W cm -2 . In addition to an intense ion yield already observed when the laser is tuned to the 3S 1/2 -3P 1/2,3/2 atomic resonances, a complex structure is revealed in the Na 2 + ion yield when the laser wavelength is scanned in the range 5800-6150 AA. A critical discussion of possible off-resonance ionisation mechanisms is proposed.
