An optical transmission technique has been used to determine the wavelength dependence of absorption coefficient and refractive index in a series of hot-pressed lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramic materials exhibiting electro-optic properties. Dispersion of the electro-optic effect was also studied. The refractive index data is described by a classical Sellmeier oscillator model giving a correlation with absorption coefficient results. The results suggest that the energy band system is susceptible to structural details in the phase boundary region.
