Does pancuronium bromide increase blood catecholamine levels in patients under halothane anaesthesia?
Does pancuronium bromide increase blood catecholamine levels in patients under halothane anaesthesia?
Pancuronium bromide administration during halothane anesthesia significantly increases blood adrenaline and noradrenaline levels, indicating sympathetic stimulation.

May indicate sympathetic activation with pancuronium under halothane; leaves open relevance to current anesthesia practice.
Determinations of blood catecholamine levels were carried out in 30 patients under halothane anaesthesia, before and 5 min after the administration of pancuronium bromide. Both adrenaline and especially noradrenaline were found to be augmented after drug injection. The changes were statistically significant: adrenaline, from 3.00 μg/1 ± 0.21 to 3.60 ± 0.20 ( P < 0.05), and noradrenaline, from 4.00 μg/1 ± 0.40 to 6.50 ± 0.61 ( P < 0.01). These findings reveal a stimulation of sympathetic nervous activity. This effect may explain, partly at least, the slight rise in blood pressure and pulse rate after pancuronium bromide administration.
